Mayoral candidate Eric Adams — who says he’s running against the far-left socialist “movement” led by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York — will really face off towards a socialist foe in the overall election.
Queens public-school instructor Cathy Rojas, a daughter of Colombian immigrants, has now formally certified to run for mayor beneath the far-left “Party for Socialism and Liberation” banner.
Rojas gathered greater than 3,750 legitimate signatures by way of unbiased petitioning to run in Nov. 2’s basic election, stated a Board of Election rep.
As The Post beforehand solely reported, Adams — town’s all-but-certain subsequent mayor — instructed donors at a Queens fundraiser final week, “I’m not working towards candidates.
“I’m working towards a motion. All throughout the nation, the DSA [Democratic Socialists of America] socialists are mobilizing to cease Eric Adams.
“They realize that if I’m successful, we’re going to start the process of regaining control of our cities,” Adams stated, based on a video of his speech.
The remarks sparked cheers and applause from attendees, largely pro-capitalist enterprise leaders, real-estate sorts and different Adams supporters.
Rojas linked to The Post story on Adams’ remarks on her Twitter feed, including in a statement, “That’s right, @ericadamsfornyc. The socialist movement is bigger than 1 candidate. The majority of youth agree w/ socialism & that’s what establishment politicians are afraid of.”
Adams opposes the DSA agenda, notably its push to defund the police and demonize the wealthy.
The outgoing Brooklyn borough president later met with the New York congressional delegation, together with AOC. He stated afterward that he was working towards DSA “philosophies,” not Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, essentially the most distinguished DSA-backed elected official in New York. He famous that he didn’t point out AOC in his fundraiser speech.
But Adams additionally individually doubled-down on his anti-socialism feedback, emphasizing that “this is not a socialist country” throughout an interview Friday on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Mayer.”
“We see what’s happening in America. We see the demonization of public safety, which I believe is the prerequisite to prosperity,” he instructed Maher. “We see the demonization of those who are high-income earners.”
Rojas seems to be working independently of the NYC-Democratic Socialists of America chapter, the group Adams has focused as an impediment to his law-and-order agenda. The DSA has not endorsed a candidate in the mayor’s race.
The DSA had no touch upon Rojas’ candidacy.
Rojas declined repeated Post requests for remark.
The Party for Socialism and Liberation, a left-wing group based in 2004 and embraced by Rojas, has a pro-communist bent. So does Rojas, who has praised the authoritarian, communist authorities of Cuba.
Rojas helps taxing the wealthy and defunding the police, cancelling all rents and mortgages, ending “mass incarceration and cash bail”, offering full rights for “all immigrants” together with those that got here right here illegally, and standing with “all oppressed people fighting against colonialism, imperialism and state repression,” she says in a press release on her marketing campaign Web website.
“Socialism would put the working class and all oppressed people in charge. We would discuss everything and make decisions without interference from Wall St. and the billionaires,” Rojas writes. “Health care is simply too essential to be left to the revenue mongers. It must be free and available. The job of a socialist authorities is to fulfill the wants of the folks.
“Our campaign is to empower and embolden the working class to build an alternative to the elitist two party system that offers no solutions and no future for the vast majority of people. That is the essence of our campaign.”
